چکیده

Concerning reports of the state of the planet and our natural resources have become increasingly familiar with many authors reporting increasing levels of unsustainable extraction. In considering this complex problem, the corporate sector has been identified by some as the 'single most influential group' (Robinson, 2012) to catalyse the shifts required to secure the future of the planet (Rose and Colchester, 2004). The reasons that have been offered in support of this claim include the fact that much of the land on the planet is controlled by corporations, the income of single corporations is often larger than many governments and that business, especially big business, and the corporate sector plays a pivotal role in controlling supply chains (Rose and Colchester, 2004). In this paper we took an optimistic stance in response to this challenge and argued that engaging business to address environmental risks is not only crucial to solving many of the key environmental challenges humans face but that businesses will be willing, given certain enabling conditions, to reshape their businesses. The latter has been argued because businesses failing to do so will increase their own vulnerability to risks that will affect their competitiveness and profitability by increasing their exposure to a variety of crucial liabilities such as operational, supply chain, regulation, reputation and financial risks (UN Global Compact and IUCN, 2012). In what followed, we explored the nature of the enabling conditions to bring about the former outcome and describe how they might be facilitated. The research findings presented are based on interviews and focus groups conducted across the supply chain of the South African food and beverage sector. This focused on the results of two case studies of businesses, who have developed a partnership with WWF South Africa to explore possibilities for creating more environmentally sustainable practices. One of these case studies focused on the fishing industry and the other on the beverage industry. The fisheries case study in turn focused on two change initiatives: the Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) and the Responsible Fisheries Alliance (RFA). The second explored the responses of a major beverage company – SAB Miller – as it recognises and responds to water boundaries. These studies form part of a broader programme of research on pivotal institutions – that is institutions thought to be well-placed to lever significant shifts within economies with respect to anthropogenic earth system engagements-within the public, private and …

A review of approaches to direct reverse osmosis membrane recycling: a technical, economic and environmental assessment

Background and Objective: Global market growth of reverse osmosis (RO) has led to an increase in annual disposal of membrane wastes. Therefore, evaluation of membrane waste management strategies is important to reduce their adverse environmental impacts. Due to the widespread domestic RO membrane market and their economic considerations, this study aims at investigation the direct recycling met...

Hydrothermal synthesis of surface-modified copper oxide-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles for degradation of acid black 1: Modeling and optimization by response surface methodology

Dyes are widely used in various industries most of them are not readily biodegradable and are consisted of number of toxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic compounds. Therefore, it is essential to remove them from effluent before their discharge to the environment. The objective of this investigation was to synthesize copper oxide (CuO) doped zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles under mild hydrothermal c...

Development of closed-loop supply chain mathematical model (cost-benefit-environmental effects) under uncertainty conditions by approach of genetic algorithm

In the current world, the debate on the reinstatement and reuse of consumer prod-ucts has become particularly important. Since the supply chain of the closed loop is not only a forward flow but also a reverse one; therefore, companies creating integ-rity between direct and reverse supply chain are successful. The purpose of this study is to develop a new mathematical model for closed loop suppl...

Simultaneous degradation and adsorption of cyanide using modified fly ASH and TiO2/UV

Due to the present water shortage and environmental problems associated with industrial effluent, investigation of novel treatment technologies is an essential approach. Being a highly toxic chemical of asphyxiating characteristics, cyanide is seen as a major environmental pollutant in a wide range of industrial effluents. The present study aimed to address the adsorption and photocatalytic deg...

Mathematical modelling of an annular photocatalytic reactor for methylene blue degradation under UV light irradiation using rGO-ZnO hybrid

The application of heterogeneous photocatalysis in industrial scale has been hindered by a lack of simple mathematical models that can be easily applied to reactor design and scale-up. This work intends to use a simple mathematical model for predicting methylene blue (MB) degradation in a slurry-annular photocatalytic reactor using zinc oxide (ZnO) hybridized with reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-Z...
